What is Smegma?

A while ago I posed the question to Instagram ‘what do you want me to write about on STWJ?’. I know some of my friends are 13 at heart so I was prepared for the overwhelming response of this particular request. So here it is, you absolute dorks, Smegma.

If you don’t know what smegma is, you’re in the right place because I am obviously about to talk about it and also I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your mouth feels, it’s so nice to say, smegggmmmaaaa. I also like to say it like how Dr Evil says magma.

Smegma? Is that dick cheese? Yes and no.
Smegma is the build-up of dead skin cells, oil and other fluids on the tip of the penis or in the folds of the vagina. So yes, it is dick cheese, but it’s also vagina cheese. Now that is the last time I am referring to it as cheese. Because, gross.

Where is it?
Smegma is most often found under the foreskin of the penis or between the labial folds or clitoral hood in the vulva.

What’s it look like?
-       Thick, cheese-like consistency (that is literally the internet talking not me – sorry)
-       White colour, can be darker depending on natural skin tone
-       Has a smell

What causes it?
All of the stuff that makes up smegma is natural and normal, and our bodies produce and release these every day. The issue of smegma occurs when the genitals aren’t washed regularly or properly, and the fluids and skin cells build up and harden, enter, smegma.

How bad is it?
I mean… it’s not great… in the sense that it’s bad hygiene, although serious complications from smegma are rare, it can lead to balanitis. If left to… fester… smegma can cause irritation, redness, swelling and inflammation and can stick folds of skin together and be painful.

How to prevent or treat smegma?
By washing your junk. Literally. If you have a dick with a foreskin, pull it back and wash around the head of the penis. If you have a vulva, spread your labial folds and wash. Avoid using perfumed or highly-scented soaps, these can cause irritation. Rinse thoroughly and dry well. If the smegma doesn’t go away after a couples of days, you should go to the doctor.

Don’t body shame people. You don’t know their circumstances . If you meet someone and one thing leads to another and you come to realise they have smegma and you want to end the interaction, don’t have to be rude about it.

ok, byeeee.
